New Art! “Seeds of Belonging”

This artwork is made up of nine small abstract artworks containing overlapping circles, each created with recycled painted papers.

What’s in a circle?

I’m very drawn to circles - especially overlapping circles - and I love how they are so open to interpretation and metaphor. Circles can be so many things - suns, moons, planets, seeds, flower heads, fruits, social worlds, circles of life, cycles of renewal we see in nature, and more - all possible interpretations that fit the metaphors within this project.

What do you see in these artworks?

Different views - just like us

Each of the artworks can be hung any side up. I love how they offer different interpretive possibilities and evoke different feelings when you turn them.

Watch…

Part of a whole - just like us

Placed together, they form a larger image: a grafted fruit tree that bears both lemons and oranges.

Each small artwork represents one part of the whole ecosystem - distinct, valuable, and alive in its own right. Yet together, they create something greater than the sum of their parts. I love that tension: how the parts can live independently, but also belong to something larger.

For me, this mirrors the way we each have a role to play in caring for the world we share. Just like in nature, where every species, root, and drop of water contributes to the whole, each of us has both individual responsibility and a shared power to create something more beautiful together.

Flourishing together in our differences

The grafted fruit tree is a powerful metaphor. For me, it’s about resilience, care, and the beauty that can emerge when we find ways to grow together in celebration of our differences.

Should I offer them individually or as a single artwork?

I love the overall design that the nine artworks create together. And that’s where the grafted fruit tree is evident.

But I also love the thought of these nine pieces eventually finding homes in different places - scattered like seeds into the world. Each living its own life, but together, they remain connected by the shared story of belonging, care, and interdependence that inspired their creation.

What do you think? Should I offer them individually or as a single artwork? (Drop me an email at cath@cathduncan.com. I’d love to hear from you!)
