Lost in another world today, playing with an old love… magazine paper collage.

I also added some of my own handmade collage papers, and now I’m feeling drawn to combine all kinds of collage papers with paint and other mixed media next.

Working abstract, free of subject and meaning, purely following what I like and stopping every so often to think about design principles.

Little mixed media abstract landscape sketches… I worked quite quickly, with no planning and not allowing myself time to stop and think until the last few marks. I tried to just focus on varying my mediums and marks, avoiding ideas of what landscapes look like, and keeping it simple. I love this limited colour palette and some of the lovely surprise marks I’d never have thought of making if I was allowing my analytical mind to think and plan it out.

My best art (and definitely my most enjoyable art-making) happens when I’m able to switch off the analytical planning side of my brain for 80 of the process and just bring it in for a bit of editing for the last 20 %!

Something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately is all the other ways I sense or feel my way through life since losing some of my vision. And how I can express in my work what I “see” with those other ways of “seeing”. This is one of the reasons why I’m drawing closer to more abstract ways of working.

After thoroughly enjoying @louisefletcher_art ‘s interview with @davidmankinart about his creative process, I am now devouring his book.

Learning more about David’s creative process is provoking me to unpack mine, and especially to think about the parts of my creative process that are most meaningful and enlivening for me, and how I can incorporate more of what I love into my creative process.

Thank you for producing this absolutely beautiful book, @davidmankinart and @culturalcapitalarts , and for your inspiring artwork, David. I hope to get to see some of your paintings in person and up close when I visit Newlyn and Penzance in July!

Mud colours and textures (and smells!). My dog, Toby, says they’re an under-appreciated beauty. I think I have to agree.

Sketchbook pages. Just for playing, experimenting, trying new colour combinations, ways of applying paint, textures, and for developing my “fitness” at being not taking things so seriously, switching off my analytical brain, being unattached to outcome, following my intuition, and embracing uncertainty. Afterwards, I like to practice compositional skills by creating various crops I like. These make me happy.

A little moment of beautiful texture and contrast… zesty bright greens and crisp cheerful blues contrasted with dull browns. And roughly textured bark and moss, contrasted with smooth skies.

Pondering simplicity and spaciousness; how lovely they are. And how I can guard them, and even let more into my art and life.
